Search Engine Optimization refers to the act of making your web pages search engine friendly. When search engine robots of Google, for example, visit your site, what do you think they will see? And what can they tell searchers about your site?
Is your site filled with non-text graphics, frames, flash animation, or javascript that search engine robots have difficulty understanding? Or does your site contain a healthy amount of plain old text, that helps these robots determine what your page is all about?
Afterall, if search engines had a clear idea of what your page is about, then they can best serve their key customers: the searchers.
Here are some tips on making your pages search engine friendly:
1. Place a generous amount of text in your pages. If your group insists on building artistically beautiful pages filled with flash animation, frames, and other doodads that search engine robots choke on, then please consider building a text-dominated partner web site.
That second site will be picked up by the search engines, and will be found by your potential customers. From that second site, you can provide a link to your beautiful original site.
2. Be human, not robotic. While it is tempting to fool Google into giving your web site a high ranking, Google can easily tell if your site was built by a human being or by some kind of automatically generated software.
For example, how many pages can you add to your site in a day? Would it be humanly possible to add 1,000 pages daily? Unless you're a superhero, chances are your site was just built by a robot. And when the search engines detect this, they feel let down, if not betrayed. (Yes, some robots have feelings, too.)
3. Be organized; have some sense of structure. I know it's not human nature to be organized, but some amount of order is needed. Does your page use H1, H2 and other hierarchical tags to help search bots determine what your page is about? Does each page have a Title?
There are various tutorials out there that deal with what to place in your html code to make it search engine friendly. If you wish, feel free to view the source code of this page. I must warn you, though, you might be shocked at the simplicity of it all.
In the next episode, you will learn about search engine placement. What good is your search engine optimized page, if it won't get indexed in the search engines, right?
