Isulong SEOPH Episode 5: Drive Traffic With Tag and Ping
Welcome to this episode of the
Isulong SEOPH Podcast on Tag and Ping in InMyEar.com
A social bookmarking site such as
Del.icio.us is a place where people share a list of their favorite sites, so that others can vote on the popularity of those sites. It also provides a convenient way of accessing your fave sites, even if you are away from your computer.
In the past, people would bookmark a site and store that information in their own computer. After a while, it became difficult to re-visit those sites because people ended up forgetting under what category they bookmarked that site. Or even if they do remember the category, there's usually a kilometric list of marked sites.
With online social bookmarking, instead of assigning sites to a "category", you mark each site with one or more "tags" (it's similar to category, except that it is spelled t-a-g-s).
With these tags, other people will check out your list especially if they are also interested in the same tag (i.e., dogs, collectibles). If they like a site in your list, they might end up tagging it also. As more people assign the same tag to the same site, that particular site goes up the ranks as it gets tagged or recommended by many people.
For example, you might see that the site Google.com was tagged as "search" by 356,386 people.
So, how exactly does that bring more visitors to your site? If your site contains useful, informative or entertaining information about a particular topic, and more people tag it, it will become more visible in those social bookmarking sites. As it rises in popularity, new visitors of those bookmarking sites get to know about you. Some of them will visit, and that is the source of your new visitors.
In addition, some social bookmarking sites are known as authority sites. That means the search engines will take notice of sites listed in those authority sites, because (in theory) a lot of people have tagged or recommended such sites. If your site is tagged and gets listed on the authority sites, you will (in some cases) get search engine points, in a manner of speaking.
Higher search engine points equals greater credibility, which helps your site rank higher in other search engines. Higher ranking in those old-time search engines gives your greater visibility, and helps you attract even more visitors.
And that's the source of new visitors: people coming in from social bookmarking sites, and people coming in from the regular search engines.
If you want to attract more people, you have to be visible in many places: traditional search engines, search directories, podcast directories, online video sites, and social bookmarking sites.
In the coming weeks, you will find on this site the step-by-step details of these traffic-boosting strategies. Stay tuned!
